The Dominican Republic has a new President, Mr. Luis Abinader, who was sworn in on Sunday, August 16, 2020. Congratulations! U.S. Secretary of State, Mr. Mike Pompeo, attended the inauguration in the country's capitol, Santo Domingo, and said via Twitter:

My visit to Santo Domingo was one to remember. U.S.-Dominican cooperation is paramount to the security and prosperity of the Caribbean and hemisphere. We stand firmly with the Dominican Republic as an ally to meet our shared goals in the region."

Travel to the Dominican Republic:

The Dominican Republic re-opened its borders on July 1, 2020. Tourists are able and welcome to travel to the Dominican Republic.

At Punta Cana Airport, which is where most tourists arrive to when traveling to the Dominican Republic, a series of preventive safety measures have been put in place due to Covid-19. These include: Social distancing, hand sanitizer stations, deep cleaning, thermal scanning and heat motion sensors, mandatory use of face masks, shield guards, and more.
