It seems like you can’t keep a good thing down! This last week, several media news outlets have been reporting about the Dominican Republic’s major comeback regarding tourism. And it’s especially the American travelers who are coming back to the destination and choosing the Dominican Republic for their Thanksgiving vacation.
According to a new survey by Allianz Global Assistance USA, Punta Cana on the east coast of the Dominican Republic has surpassed Cancun, Mexico as the favorite Thanksgiving holiday destination among U.S. travelers.
“The number of Americans traveling internationally to the Dominican Republic for Thanksgiving has nearly quadrupled in size since last year, the Allianz Top 10 Thanksgiving Destination Index found.” (Travel Pulse)
And rightfully so! Punta Cana is a fantastic and very family-oriented destination which offers lots of different types of accommodations. Families traveling for the holiday season can choose to stay in one of the many family resorts that have kids’ clubs with special amenities and facilities for children and where they are sure to make new friends among the many other families that will be staying at these resorts during the same time. Prices are amazing as many hotels & resorts are giving great discounts of up to 50% on rooms – with all-inclusive!

For families that want a more private type of accommodation where they can really get to spend quality time just with their family, there are many vacation rental villas available – located in resorts and gated communities. Through our vacation rental villa program (Palmera Villas), we offer villas from 4 to 8 bedrooms with staff. Staying in a private villa is a wonderful way to travel and gives families a chance to enjoy their own space and simply spend time together without having to be around thousands of other travelers.
Our vacation rental villas always include a maid and a villa manager (concierge), but many also include a personal chef and/or a butler. Food & beverages can be purchased separately or guests can choose an all-inclusive meal plan, which makes planning and budgeting easier.
Punta Cana also offers plenty of activities. The destination is, of course, most famous for its beaches, which are amazing. In most parts along the coast, e.g. in Punta Cana, Cap Cana and on Bavaro Beach, the beaches are protected by a coral reef, which means that you never really have huge waves coming to shore. The beaches in Punta Cana and Cap Cana are especially great for families with small children, because the ocean is shallow and calm along the beach.
Families that are looking for a more active vacation can choose from a wide range of half day and full day excursions. If you’re looking to add a dose of adrenaline to your vacation, consider booking a half day zip line excursion, adventure buggy tour, a deep-sea fishing charter, a helicopter ride and/or go scuba diving.
Apart from being a famous beach destination, Punta Cana is also the no. 1 golf destination in the Caribbean with 8 golf courses just in Punta Cana and 3 more in La Romana, approx. 45-min drive away. Golfers coming to Punta Cana can play some of the best courses in the Caribbean, including Punta Espada (a Jack Nicklaus Signature ocean-side course), which is currently ranked no. 1 in the Caribbean & Mexico by GolfWeek Magazine. The two other top courses in Punta Cana that should be on any golfer’s play list include La Cana (a 27-hole P.B Dye ocean-side course) and Corales (a Tom Fazio ocean-side course) where the PGA Tour has played in March 2018 and 2019.
For many Americans, living on the U.S. east coast and Midwest, traveling to the Dominican Republic is easy and convenient. Punta Cana is only a 2-5-hour flight and direct flight are available from many major U.S. cities such as New York (3h 50 min), Washington D.C. (3h 55 min), Chicago (4h 30 min), Philadelphia (3h 55 min), Atlanta (3h 25 min), Ft. Lauderdale (2h 20 min) and Miami (2h 20 min).
Fly directly to Punta Cana International Airport (airport code: PUJ) and when you arrive, you’ll be about a 30-min drive from your hotel or vacation rental.
If you’re not traveling for Thanksgiving, you can always look ahead and start planning your Christmas/New Year’s vacation!
