The Dominican Republic whale watching season begins every year around mid-January and lasts until mid-March. During these winter months, you have an incredible opportunity to witness the beautiful and majestic humpback whales in their natural habitat.
The Bay of Samana in the Dominican Republic is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Here, the shallow and warm ocean provides a temporary home for thousands of humpback whales.
These whales travel from the cold waters of North America, Greenland and Iceland to the Caribbean to court, mate and give birth.
Like humans, whales are mammals, which means they nurture their young, breathe air and are warm blooded. The adult whales grow up to 12-15 meters long and weigh 30-40 ton.
Humpback whales are one of the most active whale species in the world and are known for their amazing repertoire of behaviors. These include slapping the water with their fins or tail, showing the tail when they are ready to dive deep and jumping out of the water. All of these behavioral activities make the humpback whales extremely interesting and fascinating to watch.
Depending on the conditions, you will spend a few hours on the ocean watching the humpback whales play and swim. Keep in mind, though, that these whales are not in captivity. So, actual sighting of the humpback whales is in no way certain nor guaranteed!
This tour also includes a visit to the famous Cayo Levantado Island (Bacardi Island) where you can enjoy lunch, go swimming in the ocean and relax on the beach.
