A great place to begin your exploration of the Dominican Republic is the capital, Santo Domingo – the first European city in the Western hemisphere. On the way to Santo Domingo, we will make a quick photo stop at the Cathedral in the city of Higuey (ca. 45 minutes from Punta Cana)...and then we head to the capitol.
Santo Domingo is a fabulous mix of 16th century dwellings, imposing late medieval palaces and fortresses, set amidst a refreshingly non-geometric street-grid. The city was recognized as the cradle of European civilization in the New World and UNESCO has declared the Colonial City to be a world heritage site.
During the day, we will visit many important sights including the Fina Arts Palace, the National Theatre, the Presidential Palace, etc.
At the Colonial Zone we take a walk around the first buildings of the Americas, such as The Cathedral, Calle la Damas, and The Alcazar de Colon. At the expansive Plaza España, framed by the Palace of Columbus, the Casas Reales Museum and the 17th century sundial, the sidewalk cafés come to life as a place where locals and visitors meet.
When Christopher Columbus’ son, Diego, was appointed the first viceroy of the Indies, the palace of Alcazar de Colonwas built to house his court and his wife, Maria de Toledo. Built of native coral and rock on the shores of the Ozama River, El Alcazar served as the center of the Spanish court.
A typical Dominican lunch is served in the best Restaurant of typical food in the Colonial Zone with a wide variety of food and a spectacular demonstration of Dominican Folklore. Afterwards we have time for shopping at the main shopping street El Conde before we head back to the hotel.
On the way back, we will make a quick stop at Columbus Plaza in La Romana for last minute shopping and a bathroom break.
