The whale watching season runs from around mid-January until mid-March; giving you a very limited window of opportunity to witness one of the most beautiful and majestic animals in their natural habitat - the humpback whale.
The whale watching season is over for 2020 and will return in 2021.
The Bay of Samaná on the north east coast of the Dominican Republic is considered one of the best places in the world for whale watching. The shallow, warm waters in the bay provide a temporary home for thousands of humpback whales who travel from the cold waters of North America, Greenland and Iceland to the Caribbean to court, mate and give birth.
Like humans, whales are mammals. They nurture their young, breathe air and are warm blooded. The adult whales can reach up to 12-15 meters in length and weigh as much as 30-40 ton. Humpback whales are one of the most active whale species in the world and are known for their amazing repertoire of behaviors such as slapping the water with their fins or tail, showing the tail when they are ready to dive deep and jumping out of the water. All of these behavioral activities make the humpback whales extremely interesting and fascinating to watch.
Your whale watching adventure begins in the early morning. We depart the hotels between 6-7:00 am by bus and take a scenic ride through the countryside to the fishermen town of Las Cañitas, Miches where you will arrive around 8:00 am. Here we board the boat and sail out to sea to watch the magnificent humpback whales (if you get sea sick, it is recommended to take e.g. Dramamine beforehand).
After our exciting whale watching journey (approx. 2 hours) and (hopefully) watching these beautiful animals play and swim in the ocean (actual sighting of the humpback whales is in no way certain nor guaranteed!), we head to the famous Cayo Levantado island, which some also call Bacardi Island, for a typical Dominican buffet lunch. We'll have lunch around 1 pm and afterwards you'll have about an hour and 30 minutes to enjoy the beach, go for a swim in the ocean, et and time for relaxation on the beach (approx. 2 hours 30 min).
We depart again around 2:30 pm to make our way back to Punta Cana. Return to your hotel will be around 5:30 pm. Please note that the itinerary may change, depending on the operation of the day, weather, etc.
