Welcome to Punta Cana!
This is the premier tourist destination in the Dominican Republic, located on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic. Punta Cana is famous for its beaches, golf courses, and all-inclusive resorts.
This is the "tourism capital" of the Dominican Republic - i.e. where most tourists come to enjoy a Caribbean vacation like yourself.
The city consists of areas such as Cap Cana, Cabeza de Toro, Bavaro, Los Corales, El Cortecito, Arena Gorda, Macao, and Uvero Alto.
The actual area (or city) of Punta Cana is in reality just the airport and Puntacana Resort & Club, which is owned by Grupo Punta Cana (Punta Cana Group).
Frank R. Rainieri (of the prominent Dominican Rainieri family), Theodore W. Kheel, Oscar de la Renta, and Julio Iglesias founded Grupo Punta Cana in 1969. They created a resort project, which today is known as the Puntacana Resort & Club.
Since then the resort has developed immensely and today it consists of the Punta Cana International Airport, Tortuga Bay Hotel, Westin Puntacana Resort & Club, La Cana golf course, Corales golf course, an international school, a marina, Puntacana Village, and more.
Punta Borrachon was the original name of the area - before Frank R. Rainieri, et. al. founded Grupo Punta Cana. The name means something like "the drunkard's point", which obviously wasn't a particularly good name for a luxury resort. So they changed it to Punta Cana and named it after the many Cana palm trees that dotted the land.
Punta Cana has been growing and developing steadily since 2005. The areas of Cap Cana, Punta Cana, and Bavaro are currently the most active regions. This is where new construction, hotels, villas, etc. are emerging as the destination continues to grow.
